How to Turn Instagram DM Ads into Shopify Sales (2026)

An Instagram DM ad sends the click to a chat with your brand instead of a landing page. You then have a short window to turn that chat into an order. This guide walks through each step for a Shopify store.

Disclosure: Moshi wrote this guide and uses its own AI sales agent as the example in places. The steps work with any tool or a human team.

Step 1: Set up the ad

Create the ad in Meta Ads Manager and pick a messaging destination. Guides from respond.io and ReplyAtlas describe the path: choose a click-to-message setup, pick Instagram Direct as the destination, and set the call to action to Send message. Menu names and which objectives allow messaging differ between sources and accounts, so confirm in your own Ads Manager.

Then write the first prompt the shopper sees. Meta’s ice breakers let a business offer up to four preset questions that start a conversation. Pick questions a buyer would ask, such as “Which one is right for dry skin?” Ice breakers are not available on desktop.

Step 2: Send the first reply fast

The shopper tapped an ad a moment ago, so attention is highest now. A reply in seconds keeps them in the thread. Moshi replies in under 8 seconds.

Keep the first reply short. Greet them, name the product they clicked, and ask one question. Do not paste a policy or a discount code yet.

Step 3: Qualify with one or two questions

Ask what the shopper wants. A skincare shopper might get “What is your skin type?” A coffee shopper might get “How do you brew?” Two questions are enough. More feels like a form.

The answers help you pick the product and show who is ready to buy and who is browsing. An AI agent reads the answer and moves on. In a rule-based tool, you build a branch for each answer.

Step 4: Recommend one or two products

Recommend from live inventory. A suggestion for a sold-out size ends the sale. The agent needs access to your Shopify catalog for this. Moshi reads live products from the catalog, answers questions, and handles objections.

Give a reason with each pick, tied to what the shopper said. Offer a second option only if the first one misses.

Step 5: Send the checkout link

Send a link that opens the cart with the product in it. Shopify offers two building blocks. A cart permalink builds a cart from variant IDs and quantities, and can prefill an email and an address. Shopify’s docs also list a ref parameter for a referral code, and say newer cart and checkout permalinks supersede the legacy format. For shoppers who already reached checkout, Shopify exposes a recovery URL on an abandoned checkout, which merchants can send so the buyer resumes the purchase.

Shopify says a checkout counts as abandoned after the customer adds contact information. Abandoned checkouts older than three months are deleted, and recovery applies only to Online Store and Buy Button channels. Reading abandoned checkouts through the API needs the right scope and permissions.

Step 6: Follow up inside Meta’s window

If the shopper goes quiet, follow up once, and only while Meta’s rules allow it. Meta’s Messenger platform policy says the standard window lasts 24 hours for most user actions. Tapping a Click-to-Direct ad and sending a first message opens it, and Meta says the window may then last up to 7 days from that message. Messages sent inside the window may contain promotional content.

Outside the window, the rules tighten. Meta’s policy says its Human Agent tag lets a business respond manually within a separate 7-day period. That is for a person answering a question, not for automated promotion. Sponsored Messages can carry promotional content outside the window. Read the current policy and your platform’s review terms, because Meta changes them.

Good follow-up is short. Remind the shopper what they picked, answer the likely question, and repeat the link. One nudge is enough.

A channel with no 24-hour limit can carry the conversation further. Moshi extends the chat into iMessage and RCS for this reason.

Step 7: Hand off when the agent should stop

Some chats need a person: an angry shopper, a custom request, a complaint. Meta’s Instagram messaging docs describe an escalation path to a human agent for apps, through a custom inbox or an automated flow with a fallback keyword. Set a clear trigger for it, and make sure the person sees the whole thread.

Step 8: Measure what the ads earned

Count orders. A shopper may start a conversation and buy two days later in the same thread, so you need the link between the ad, the conversation, and the order.

Moshi tags revenue at each step: ad impression, ad click, DM, recommendation, purchase. If you use another tool, check that it records the ad ID on the conversation and the order. Meta’s webhooks can carry a referral with the ad ID, per third-party documentation. Compare Meta’s numbers with your Shopify orders for the same dates.

An example conversation

A shopper taps an ad for a moisturizer and lands in the DM. A good thread looks like this.

  • Brand: “Hi, thanks for tapping. Is this for dry or oily skin?”
  • Shopper: “Dry, and it gets tight in winter.”
  • Brand: “Then the rich cream fits best. It has the thicker texture for dry skin. Want the 50 ml or the travel size?”
  • Shopper: “50 ml.”
  • Brand: “Here is your cart: (checkout link). Ask me anything before you pay.”

The thread has three brand messages. Each one asks a question or moves the shopper forward. Write yours in your brand’s voice.

Questions buyers ask

How do you convert Instagram DM ads into sales?

Reply fast, ask what the shopper wants, recommend one or two products, and send a checkout link in the thread. Follow up inside the messaging window if they do not buy. Track orders back to the ad.

Can an AI agent send Shopify checkout links in Instagram DMs?

Yes, if it connects to your store. Shopify exposes a recovery URL for abandoned checkouts and cart permalinks for building a cart link. Moshi reads the live Shopify catalog and sends shoppers to checkout in the DM.

How long can a business message someone after an ad click?

Meta’s policy says the standard messaging window lasts 24 hours for most user actions. For a Click-to-Direct ad, it says the window may last up to 7 days from the shopper’s first message.

How do you recover abandoned carts from Instagram DMs?

Send a short reply with the checkout link while the messaging window is open. After the window closes, send promotional content only through Meta’s Sponsored Messages. A channel with no 24-hour limit, such as iMessage, can carry the follow-up.
